Loft lighting is electrical work — and electrical work is regulated. Choosing fixtures, cable spec and switch position correctly is what separates a safe, certified install from a fire risk.
LED panel lights at 10W deliver the same brightness as a 60W halogen, run at a fraction of the temperature, and outlast both halogen and fluorescent by 10–15×. There is no scenario where halogen is the right choice for a modern loft.
Switches at the hatch — wired through a one-gang surface-mount box — are the gold standard. Pull-cord switches in the loft are acceptable but require fumbling overhead. PIR motion sensors are cleanest of all but cost £25–£40 more.
Loft circuits must be on their own fused spur (3A) from the consumer unit or a nearby ring. We never spur loft lights off existing downlight circuits — common DIY error and a Part P violation.
One 10W panel covers roughly 10m² of loft floor. A typical 25m² boarded loft needs three panels for shadow-free coverage. We mark positions during survey.
