Multi-Layer vs Single-Layer Foil
Single-layer foil reflects radiant heat but adds negligible thermal resistance. Multi-layer products like Actis Hybris (8 layers, 35mm) or SuperFOIL SF40 add genuine R-2.5 to R-3.5 of thermal performance.
Multi-layer reflective foil installed across rafters reflects up to 95% of radiant heat back into the home, brightens the loft 4× over, and prevents the dust and felt fibre fall-out from old underlay roofs.
Installation of multi-layer reflective foil insulation (Actis Hybris, SuperFOIL SF40, YBS Airtec) stapled across the underside of rafters or laid above existing insulation to reflect radiant heat and create a clean, finished loft interior.
Owners of older properties with degrading bitumen felt underlay (the black gritty stuff that sheds onto stored items). Anyone wanting a cleaner, brighter loft for storage or future conversion. Homes with rooms-in-roof needing additional rafter-line insulation.
Whenever felt underlay starts shedding, after any roof works that exposed the rafters, or as part of a comprehensive insulation upgrade for hard-to-treat properties.
Conventional fibre insulation only blocks conducted and convected heat. Reflective foil tackles radiant heat — the dominant heat-loss mode through pitched roofs in summer and heat-gain in winter sun.
If your loft looks black, smells musty and showers grit every time you climb in, your roof underlay is breaking down. Foil lining solves it in a day.
We assess rafter spacing, existing felt condition, ventilation paths and lighting. Fixed quote on the day.
We vacuum the loft, remove loose felt debris and protect existing insulation and pipework.
Multi-layer reflective foil stapled across rafters with reflective face inward, joints sealed with foil tape, eaves and ridge ventilation paths preserved.
Optional LED strip or pendant lighting installed against the new bright reflective surface — most clients add this.
Photo report, written guarantee and care advice.
Reflective surface bounces light 4× — torch-free access for the first time in years.
Captures bitumen grit and fibre that would otherwise contaminate stored belongings.
Multi-layer foil with two air gaps adds genuine thermal performance on top of any existing insulation.
Reflects radiant heat back through the roof, reducing first-floor temperatures by 3–5°C in heatwaves.
If you ever convert the loft, the foil layer becomes part of the rafter-line insulation build-up.
Standard pitched roof lined in a single working day with zero disruption.

Reflective foil is widely misunderstood. Done well, it's transformative; done badly, it's a £400 waste of staples. Material spec, air gap and ventilation continuity all matter.
Single-layer foil reflects radiant heat but adds negligible thermal resistance. Multi-layer products like Actis Hybris (8 layers, 35mm) or SuperFOIL SF40 add genuine R-2.5 to R-3.5 of thermal performance.
Reflective foil only works with an air gap of at least 25mm on the reflective face. We always install with stand-off battens to maintain the gap and double its effectiveness.
Older bitumen felt is impermeable, trapping moisture. Modern breathable foil membranes (Tyvek Reflex, Klober Permo Air) allow water vapour out while still reflecting radiant heat.
Lining the rafter line is only safe if eaves and ridge ventilation paths are preserved. We never seal the loft — cold-roof airflow continues uninterrupted.
Foil works best as a complement to, not replacement for, traditional insulation. Belt-and-braces installs combine 270mm at joist level with rafter-line foil for total thermal envelope.
